We often think of tools that we have as a resource, and they can be, but we also have to realize that if we can fall into the temptation of taking shortcuts where we were never meant to take them. There have been times when I just couldn’t put my thoughts together in a way that was cohesive, and I have taken the shortcut. I knew even as I taught them, that it was not HolySpirit led. And the reality is if Jesus said:
For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak. And I know that His command is everlasting life. Therefore, whatever I speak, just as the Father has told Me, so I speak. John 12:49-50
How much more should we be listening for God when it comes to teaching others and speaking?
I will say this comes from a prompting in my own spirit, but I feel is very backed up by the Word of God and the examples I will share, I am not asking for agreement, only an open mind for you to allow Holy Spirit to guide you.
In Bible days, they did not have artificial intelligence. But they did have artificial gods and mediums or sorcerers, that were used in much the same way as we are tempted to use AI. God spoke very clearly about the use of these people and objects.
‘Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God. Leviticus 19:31
Strong’s H3049 – yiḏʿōnî From TWOT Reference: (Yid-on-iah) familiar spirit, magician and sorcerer. Since the root of yidd’ ‘oni is the verb ydda‘ ‘‘to know,” implied in the title, therefore, is esoteric knowledge (Special knowledge – known by a select few) not available to the ordinary person. God forbad his people to consult the yidd° ‘dni (Lev 19:31: 20:6, 27; Deut 18:11) as well as other diviners. Despite the fact that Saul outlawed them, he still consulted an yidd°‘dni according to I Sam 28. How the Israelite kings dealt with these spiritists was a significant factor in characterizing the king as good or evil (JI Kgs 21:6: 23:24; II Chr 33:6). Isaiah spoke of them with utter scorn (8:19; 19:3).
““When you enter the land which the Lord your God gives you, you shall not learn to imitate the detestable things of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For whoever does these things is detestable to the Lord;and because of these detestable things the Lord your God will drive them out before you. You shall be blameless before the Lord your God. For those nations, which you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice witchcraft and to diviners, but as for you, the Lord your God has not allowed you to do so. Deuteronomy 18:9-14
“Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help And rely on horses, And trust in chariots because they are many And in horsemen because they are very strong, But they do not look to the Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!” Isaiah 31:1
“Thus says the Lord, “Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind And makes flesh his strength, And whose heart turns away from the Lord. For he will be like a bush in the desert And will not see when prosperity comes, But will live in stony wastes in the wilderness, A land of salt without inhabitant. Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord And whose trust is the Lord. For he will be like a tree planted by the water, That extends its roots by a stream And will not fear when the heat comes; But its leaves will be green, And it will not be anxious in a year of drought Nor cease to yield fruit. “The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? I, the Lord, search the heart, I test the mind, Even to give to each man according to his ways, According to the results of his deeds.” Jeremiah 17:5-10
“When they say to you, “Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,”should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living? Isaiah 8:19
“‘As for the person who turns to mediums and to spiritists, to play the harlot after them, I will also set My face against that person and will cut him off from among his people. You shall consecrate yourselves therefore and be holy, for I am the Lord your God.” Leviticus 20:6-7
So what happened when the Israelites turned to false gods or mediums? Here are just a few examples:
I realize that comparing AI to the false gods and mediums in the OT may feel like a stretch and maybe it is, I have listened to teachings on both sides of the coin, What I know is that using AI as a tool to make my writing more professional or to summarize what I have been studying is different than seeking it for answers that should come from personal study and guidance from the Holy Spirit. Although there is still a part of me that knows God gave me the characteristics of my speech, how I talk, and how I share information – so maybe it is not okay for teaching and preaching.
When I listen to a message or read material like a book or commentary, my spirit should confirm that the spirit in the person teaching/preaching has a word from God. When I pull information from AI, I have no guarantee where that information originated. Ai is pulling esoteric knowledge. As a believer, I am called to be led by Holy Spirit, to trust God and allow Him to reveal all things and renew my mind. Lets look at some scriptures that show this:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, which some have professed and in so doing have departed from the faith. 1 Timothy 6:20-21
Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ” Matthew 15:7-9
But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26
However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He [c]will take of Mine and declare it to you. John 16:13-15
And (do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. Romans 12:2
God’s people are called to seek Him rather than rely on human strength, worldly systems, or spiritual substitutes. There are spiritual risks of relying on AI in ways that may replace personalstudy, discernment, and dependence on the Holy Spirit. AI can be useful, but taking shortcuts in teaching or speaking for God is a concern when those words should come from prayerful listening and Spirit-led conviction. Even Jesus spoke only what the Father commanded, making it vital for believers to seek God in guiding others.
We are called to reject false knowledge, avoid merely human doctrines, and be transformed by God’s truth. God’s call is to humility, discernment, and wholehearted dependence on Him.
While tools may assist us, they must never be a substitute for seeking God, studying His Word, and listening for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. As believers, we are invited to examine where our trust truly rests and to choose the narrow path of obedience, allowing God—not convenience, hidden knowledge, or human wisdom—to shape what we believe, teach, and speak.
