“And with all his abundant wealth through Christ Jesus, my God will supply all your needs.” Philippians 4:19
Paul knew what it was like to have God meet his needs through others. He was a tent maker, but often received help from those he ministered to. Paul was letting the people of Philippi know that he received their gifts. He was thanking them for giving to him. And then Paul was in turn asking God to bless the people from God’s wealth because of their faithfulness in giving to him.
We often quote this Scripture out of context. We speak this truth as if God is a genie in a bottle granting all our needs just because we “found him.” He does bless His children. It gives Him pleasure to give us the desires of our heart. This one though, is in response to previous giving.
The Philippians consistently supported Paul as he ministered across Greece. He prayed this blessing to him be returned to them through the riches of Christ. They didn’t ask for it. They didn’t give with the idea of getting blesses, they just gave.

As Christian, we are called to give, of our time, ourselves, and our resources. We are reflecting His image when we give because He gave His Son for us. We don’t give to receive.
“I have shown you in all things that by working hard in this way we must help the weak, remembering the words that the Lord Jesus himself said, ‘There is more happiness in giving than in receiving.’”” Acts 20:35
God does bless us when we give without motive. “Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands—all that you can hold. The measure you use for others is the one that God will use for you.””
Luke 6:38
God does supply for all our needs, but this Scripture by Paul is not a blanket promise. Unless we first meet the giving that this request was attached to, we can’t stand on the promise that God will supply all our needs. The motive of our heart matters. We give to reflect God’s heart, not to receive. When our heart is to give, the Lord will supply all our needs.
