“You may make your plans, but God directs your actions.” Proverbs 16:9
As I read this passage, my mind thought
about a director in a movie and the role they
play in a movie’s plan. Wikipedia states “a film
director controls a film’s artistic and dramatic
aspects and visualizes the screenplay while
guiding the film crew and actors in the fulfillment of that vision.”
I have the opportunity to get an inside view
of many people’s lives as a social worker. Since my very first internship, I have thought people’s lives are so much more interesting than television. T.V. Shows and movies are limited by the screenplay writer’s imagination. Our lives are written by God. the one who created the entire world and all of Creation.

God is the author of our screenplay called life; He’s also the director. He gives us some ability to take creative liberties. However, if we follow His direction, like taking action where He says too, what looks like our plan will go so much smoother.
God is the author of peace. “For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.” I Corinthians 14:33
He is the author of eternal salvation “And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,” Hebrews 5:9
He is the author of our faith “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” Hebrews 12:2
So if His authoring the story of my life to include peace, salvation and faith, why would I oppose His direction for what actions I take? I know from experience when I try to control the story, I tend to create confusion and chaos; Not peace.
I tend to get myself in bad of situations, ones
I need saving from. Versus actually following
His directions which leact to eternal salvation.
And I tend to put my faith in things that eventually let me down or fail me completely; unlike God who never fails me. I can always trust Him as the author and finisher of my faith.
Each day God gives me a choice (and really
each second) to make my own plans or to allow Him to direct my action’s down His best script for my life. He will continue to offer, but only I can chose to follow His direction for my life.
Prayer Lord, I often make a mess of things when I follow the plans I make. I have a lifetime of things I’ve had to pray my way out of and then still suffer the consequences of
my actions, because I tried to take control of my own story. I pray that You would daily help me to surrender my will to You and follow Your directions for my life. In Jesus name. Amen.
