Knowing Him

 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. John 14:16-17

Holy Spirit has always been the hardest person in the Godhead for me to understand, likely because of my upbringing. His qualities and characteristics of His personality are not really something I learned about or had from a parental figure growing up. I can relate to Him as Guide (John 16:13), Teacher (Luke 12:12), Spirit of Wisdom (Isaiah 11:2), Spirit of Truth (John 16:13), and Spirit of Revelation (Ephesians 1:17). I have studied Him, but still feel I have so much to learn of His Person. I have experienced Him as Helper (John 14:26), Comforter (Acts 9:31) and Counselor (Isaiah 11:2); yet, I know I need a deeper revelation even in these areas.

He is there, wanting to be accessed in my life. Remembering He is a person, an active part of the Trinity, and yet the same, is important. If someone is around and I don’t know they are there, they may call out to me, and I will answer. This is how Holy Spirit draws us into salvation (John 16:13-15). Yet, it I know someone is in the room wanting to talk with me, but chose to not acknowledge them when they speak to me, I have closed myself off to that person by choice. If I am aware of Holy Spirit, but will not acknowledge Him, I cut off His access to my life. He is not able to reveal Himself to me.

I also thought about how the world can not receive Him because they do not know Him or see Him. He is a unique person. Many religions have a “god.” Many have a prophet or person similar to Jesus whereby other religions believe salvation comes from. I admit I am not familiar with a lot of world religions, I have not heard of many that believe in the personal sacrifice for sins as Jesus did for us. I also have not heard of anyone like Holy Spirit that abides in and with followers forever. I don’t have to walk in fear that I will mess up and be too far gone for God to reach. He is within me. That is a powerful revelation.

Prayer – Holy Spirit, I know I need You. I know You reside in me and are here on earth to help me. Teach me to be more aware of Your presence. Teach me to be more aware of Your availability and You willingness to help guide me. Reveal to me a deeper truth, more wisdom and knowledge. I know I need more of You in my life. I need a greater level of surrender to You working in and through my life. Help me get there!
