“I said, “My strength has perished, along with my expectation from Yahweh.”” Lamentations 3:18
Other translations use the word Endurance for strength. Lexicon :: Strong’s H5331 – neṣaḥ eminence, enduring, everlastingness, perpetuity enduring of life, and so life itself as enduring:
The Scriptures before share of the destruction of Jerusalem. It goes into detail about the utter turmoil that was either experienced by the writer or witnessed. His will to love was gone. He didn’t feel he had the strength to go on. He had no hope left.
Despite how he was feeling, and everything he had experienced, he called to remembrance God’s goodness in verses 21-23.
This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope. It is because of Yahweh’s loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn’t fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “Yahweh is my portion,” says my soul. “Therefore I will hope in him.” Yahweh is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that a man should hope and quietly wait for the salvation of Yahweh. It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. Let him sit alone and keep silence, because he has laid it on him. Let him put his mouth in the dust, if so be there may be hope. Let him give his cheek to him who strikes him; let him be filled full with reproach. For the Lord will not cast off forever. For though he cause grief, yet he will have compassion according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses. For he does not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men.” Lamentations 3:18, 21-33
Despite what the writer was facing, he remembered that something good would come of it. He remembered God is good.
I remember one of the toughest times in my life, I reached a point where my desire to keep going on had perished. I made an attempt to take my own life. I am thankful now I was not successful, because that period in my life passed. I look back now and can see the purpose in my pain, although no one could have convinced me of that in the moment. It is so easy to get focused on the circumstances around us; we lose our strength.
“The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.” Psalms 18:2
Our strength as believers in Christ comes from the Lord. When we get our eyes off Him and onto our circumstances, it is easy to lose our hope and will to endure through the moment. Yet, it only takes turning our focus back to Him to build us back up.
I have seen it in my own life. I have seen it in the lives of those I have the honor of serving and ministering to. It is a simple but powerful solution when circumstances are stacked against us. It doesn’t make the problems go away, but their power fades as He strengthens us to walk through the circumstances. The Israelites were able to endure and made it out of Babylon. God will give us the strength to endure too.
Prayer – Lord, thank You for strengthening me to endure through life’s toughest moments. Thank You for being there in and through it all, even when I felt like just giving up. Bring this to remembrance when I need to endure in the future. I know more tough times will come, but I want to keep my eyes on You because You are the strength I need to endure though anything. Amen!
