“And the Lord will make you the head and not the tail; you shall be above only, and not be beneath, if you heed the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, and are careful to observe them.” Deuteronomy 28:13
There is a popular television evangelist that made this scripture very popular a few years ago. I woke up this morning thinking about how important knowing our position in Christ is. I had a few very vivid pictures of how position impacts us for the positive or negative. If we don’t know where we stand with the Lord, it is easy for us to ask for things He has already provided.
The first was bowing before royalty. Some bow in honor, other bow in fear begging for what they need. The physical position is the same, but the position of the request, the heart and motivation are different. Often times we come to God the same way, whether we prostrate ourselves or not.
When we come to Him in reverent awe, we understand the gift given to us through the death and resurrection of Christ. We know that it is not because of who we are that we can approach His throne boldly. We are assured there is nothing we have done, our access is solely because of the blood of Christ.
There are other times where shame or guilt keep us from going to the Lord. When we finally decide drawing close to Him is more needed than distancing because of our guilt and shame we often come to Him on bender knee begging and pleading as if what was finished on Calvary is not enough in comparison to our sin.
I would not make my children beg me for what they need. Yet so often we approach the Lord not as a son or daughter but as a beggar before a stingy God. I can not imagine how that must hurt His heart. His Word says:

“If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”” Luke 11:13
And
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us,”
Ephesians 3:20
And
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” James 1:17
We have a good, good Father. He gives good things to us. He can and will do things for us more than we can even ask or think. Every good thing we have comes from Him. We can come to Him in revenant awe, but we don’t need to beg Him.
The second picture I saw was about where we position ourselves. I pictured a band who should be playing from a stage, where all the equipment and instruments can be plugged in and work together. Then that same band was trying to play in random places around the auditorium wanting to do things “ their way”. They were separated by space, the set up did not support the needs for the various equipment. If we showed up for a concert and everything was set up around the room, we would likely question “What the heck are they thinking?”
Yet, so often want to have our position based on “our way” instead of positioning ourself on the stage that God designed just for us. When we try to do things our way, we disconnect ourselves from our Source. We loose the power that comes only from Him.
He designed each of us for connection with others. He positions us to be in fellowship. For some that may look like a microphone or instrument and a tech guy. For others that may be a tribe of women that support and encourage us along the journey of life. For others, it may be crowds of people. God designed us for community, how big the community is depends on what He has positioned us to do.
Our position to God is based solely on Jesus Christ. We do need to be reverent, but we don’t need to beg Him to meet our needs. He wants to bless His children. We need to stay positioned in His plans for our life so that we stay connected to His power. Every person is positioned for fellowship on some level with others.
Prayer – Lord, help me to accept what Christ made available, my position inHim let’s me come to You. Thank you good, good Father for meeting my needs and blessing me beyond measure. Lord, I want to stay in position of Your will and allow Your power to flow in and through me. Let me be in the right position, with the right people in Your perfect plan and timing! Position me where and how You want me.
