“He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” Psalm 91:4
I looked up the difference between a shield and buckler in Merriman-Webster dictionary. Shields were very large, are used to hide behind or in attack. Bucklers were small shields that usually fit on the wrist her forearm and was used in hand to hand combat.
The Lord shelters me from danger. He protects me trouble with his wings. The cover is protective like a shield, an armor. I do not think of a bird as a protective covering. Yes, I know they can be protective of their nest and young, but it is not the first animal that I would use to depict protection.

Yet, maybe that is one of those things God Jesus to confound us. We think we need the big, strong lion, but it is in the picture of a bird, he shows us. Birds can blend in, they use their wings, their beaks and talents to defend themselves. They can join together and cause a great destruction. God gather just under his wings of protection. He defends us, and then we join together with him and other believers. We have ability to cause a great destruction in the enemy’s camp.
Lord, thank you for your wings of protection. I have seen you protect and defend me time and time again. I know you have covered me. I have sought refuge in you and seen your faithfulness. I praise you for both.
