Passage – Therefore, I urge the congregation leaders among you, as a fellow-leader and witness to the Messiah’s sufferings, as well as a sharer in the glory to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is in your care, exercising oversight not out of constraint, but willingly, as God wants; and not out of a desire for dishonest gain, but with enthusiasm; 1 Peter 5:1-2
Restated in Your Own Words – Paul warns leaders, as someone who witnessed Christ, was a fellow leader, shared with suffering and the future glory to come not to lead out of constraint or dishonest gain but to shepherd all under their care, exercise oversight willingness, as God wants, and with enthusiasm.
Application to your life – I am not a leader of a congregation but I thank God calls all leaders to serve out of a willing heart. He calls us to serve with enthusiasm. He calls us to give oversight to those we lead but not force constraint. He wants us to willingly lead as if unto Him.
I admit I’m not the best with oversight. My heart is willing to serve. I can do it with enthusiasm. I do my best to serve unto God. But sometimes my black and white thinking gets me in trouble. At times I want something done a certain way. It does come as more constraining and I realized that I know it’s an area God will work on if I’m willing to step up and into the leadership He’s called me to.
Your response to God – Lord, thank You for showing me through Your leaders how I should lead. I pray that You would continue to work on my leadership abilities refining them to look more like You.
