Brotherly Love

Passage – Finally, all of you, be one in mind and feeling; love as brothers; and be compassionate and humble-minded, 1 Peter 3:8

Restated in my own words – Christian men and women need to be in unity, love each other, be compassionate and not think highly of themselves.

Application to my own life – Brotherly loves, that is what the phrase that I immediately was drawn to. God wants us to be in unity but He also knew there would be disagreements. Brothers and sisters fight. They don’t always see eye to eye.

Looking at some of the brothers portrayed in the Bible:

Cain and Abel, one died.

Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers.

David’s brothers thought he was glory seeking.

Jacob and Esau fought in the womb.

Yet, above all they were family. Maybe that is why God added compassion and humble-mindedness. Treating others with compassion would stop some of the brotherly issues and the other would be stopped by being humble-minded as they wouldn’t seek to one up each other.

Your response back to God – Lord, thank you for an example of how to be. You faced rejection, yet family is still mentioned in your story. You are compassionate, You are love, You are unity, You are humble-minded. Make me more like You Lord. Help me to stand in unity with others. Help me to be more compassionate showing brotherly love. Help me to be more humble-minded and express it better to others.
