Scripture – As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem they came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed them into her home. Her sister Mary sat on the floor, listening to Jesus as he talked.
But Martha was the jittery type and was worrying over the big dinner she was preparing.
She came to Jesus and said, “Sir, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.”
But the Lord said to her, “Martha, dear friend, you are so upset over all these details! There is really only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it—and I won’t take it away from her!” Luke 10:38-42
Thoughts about what this Scripture means – Mary realized being in Jesus’ presence was the only thing that mattered. Jesus honored that over the service
Application to my life – Yesterday, Fabian visited and shared briefly out of this passage. He made the comment that it is better to be a Mary who knows how to serve than a Martha who knows how to worship. It was a powerful comment to me that brought conviction.
I love serving but it does often times get in the way of my time with God. Then I find myself with a critical Spirit just like Martha. I catch myself more often lately relating to Martha. I am busy serving and although I pray I don’t always seek to sit in His presence like I used too.
I love the presence of God. I can tell when I’ve been there, but really I need to stay there. My service is better when it comes from the place of abiding. God has shown me little ways I could choose to connect with Him, ways I have not chosen to follow.
This is the one thing He desires, to abide in His presence. It is the one thing He will not take from me.
