We are saved by grace, not by works. My pastor recently made a comment that just really drove home this scripture. He said “Faith makes possible what grace makes available.” Everything that we need is available through the grace of God in Christ Jesus. But the works of our faith appropriate what Christ died for us to have.
The scriptures say that faith without works is dead (James 2:14-26). We work hard to show our faith, to God to those around us, to the lost and dying world. Our faith moves us into action. This takes discipline. Our works show what we believe. They explain the Word of the truth.
We are called to do everything we do as if we are doing it for God (Colossians 3:23). Everything. That is a powerful word. If I am washing dishes, I am working unto the Lord. If I am watching my grandchildren, I am working unto the Lord. If I am serving in the church, I am working unto the Lord. If I am working on my job, volunteering, resting, I am doing it unto the Lord.
Working out our faith takes discipline. It is easy to say that “I believe”. It takes discipline to walk out that believe out so that we prove what we believe. Let our works correctly explain the Word of truth.
