He Never Loses Sight of Us

And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so as to go by day and night. He did not take away the pillar of cloud by day or the pillar of fire by night from before the people.” ‭‭Exodus‬ ‭13‬:‭21‬-‭22‬ ‭‬‬

And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”” Matthew‬ ‭27‬:‭46‬ ‭‬‬

God leads us if we are willing to follow Him. The Israelites were lead by a pillar of cloud and fire; at times I do wish that it were so clear, it is undeniable to see a pillar. However, Holy Spirit within will also direct me. Even if I feel like I can’t see the way, God never loses sight of me.

There are times in our journey, that we cry out asking “Where are You God?” We stop feeling His presence. We question if He has left us alone, despite His promise to never leave us or forsake us.

Last weekend I was walking in my neighborhood. I live in the desert and generally walk along the same paths, they are established paths around my neighborhood. But I was feeling a little more motivated and decided to walk past where the sidewalk ends and the road begins. I reasoned that I cross two main roads and that as I increased the “block” I was walking, I would cross one of those roads and come back to my usual path. I was wrong.

Initially I was walking with confidence. Then the road turned to dirt, and I lost sight of the things that were familiar. There was no traffic and no signs of humans besides occasional trash. The land is usually rather flat, but there are hills and valleys blocking the view of the road I usually walk along. I was not running into the roads that I felt like I should be passing. There was nothing but the dirt road ahead and behind me and dirt hills. I finally called my husband saying “please come get me and the dog.” I gave him directions and kept walking towards where I thought he could find me. It took him longer than I wanted, but I did find another neighborhood which made me feel a little more secure.

Proverbs reminds us, “Ponder the path of your feet, And let all your ways be established. Do not turn to the right or the left; Remove your foot from evil.” Proverbs‬ ‭4‬:‭26‬-‭27‬ ‭ We need to follow the path He establishes.

We run into danger when we try to create our own paths and think we know better than His established path. We may walk through times where we question where He is. With God we will walk through valleys, even as Christians, but we can rest assured that when we feel like we have lost sight of Him, but He never loses sight of us.
