What is “Done for Him”

I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’” ‭‭Luke‬ ‭18‬:‭12‬ ‭‬

This was part of a prayer offered by a Pharisee. He was letting God (and everyone who could hear him) know of His good deeds. The Pharisee was counting himself as more spiritual than others. Jesus went on to say that the Pharisee was not justified by his prayers and would eventually be humbled.

What can I learn from this passage about fasting?

  • Fasting is not a task to be completed.
  • Fasting does not make one person more spiritual than another.
  • Pointing out to God what one has “done for Him” will not bring justification.
  • Pointing out to God what one has “done for Him” will eventually lead to God humbling the person.

Lord, forgive me for times I have treated fasting as a task to be completed instead of as a blessing in being able to draw closer to You. Lord I humble myself knowing that any goodness in me is only because of the blood of Jesus that covers me. Lord let everything I do bring You glory, because it is only in and through You I can do all things.
