Fast for God, Not Yourself

Then the word of the Lord of hosts came to me, saying, “Say to all the people of the land, and to the priests: ‘When you fasted and mourned in the fifth and seventh months during those seventy years, did you really fast for Me—for Me? When you eat and when you drink, do you not eat and drink for yourselves?” ‭‭Zechariah‬ ‭7‬:‭4‬-‭6‬ ‭‬‬

God was asking, rather implying that the people had regularly fasted during the seventy years of exile. However, He let them know it was not for Him, it was for themselves.

What can I learn about fasting from this passage?

  • Just because there is regular fasting, doesn’t mean it is for God.
  • Make sure not to produce the habit of fasting without seeking God intentionally.

Lord, let me not make a habit of just not eating and drinking for the sake of saying I fasted. Let me intentionally seek You every time I fast. In Jesus name. Amen.
