“She wrote in the letters, saying, Proclaim a fast, and seat Naboth with high honor among the people; and seat two men, scoundrels, before him to bear witness against him, saying, “You have blasphemed God and the king.” Then take him out, and stone him, that he may die.” I Kings 21:9-10
This fast proclaimed by Queen Jezebel was a trap for Naboth. She was trying to secure a vineyard for King Ahab and Naboth had turned down the kings request to buy the vineyard.
What can I learn from this passage on fasting?
- Not all fasts are of the Lord.
- People can have ulterior motives.
Lord, help me to not be deceived by false calls to fast. Let me understand others alternatives. Amen.
