Prayer Against the Division in Our Nation

Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance, leading to a knowledge of the truth (2 Timothy 2:23-25 ESV).

Lord, with tensions on the rise in the culture, economic turmoil, dissatisfaction with the government, and violent protests, division seems to be growing in our nation. I stand in the gap for America so we will not see history repeated. If “history belongs to the intercessors” as one theologian said, then I can do something about it through faith-filled, persistent prayer.

Lord, I pray for wisdom, discernment, and understanding for our nation’s leaders so they transcend divisiveness and keep our nation from descending into hateful conflict, violence, and outright civil war. I pray against the false news that is spread to insight more division. Let the truth prevail. Let justice reign. Lord help leaders govern with fairness and loving concern for all Americans.

Help all to see that a divided house cannot stand. We do not have to agree about everything to respect each other’s opinions. People do not need to trample on the rights of others to be able to take their stand for what they see is right. We can peacefully express ourselves without inciting hatred for others.

Lord, I pray Your people would also exercise their rights in love. I have seen the hated spread in Your name. I have seen the shameful signs and condemning protests. You hate sin, but You love the sinners. You loved people where they were and invited them to change, You sat with them and brought change. Help us to follow Your example, not the world’s example.

Bring peace and unity in this nation. Help Your Church to rise up in love to meet the needs of those hurting around us, whether we agree with them or not, help us to be Your hands and feet. Help us not cause more division. In Jesus name. Amen.
