When the Lord Fights the Battle

And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. So Judah gathered together to ask help from the Lord; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord.” ‭‭II Chronicles‬ ‭20‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭‬‬

2 Chronicles 20 gives the account of Moab and Ammon attacking Judah. Upon hearing the news they were coming the king declared a fast for the nation. They cried out to the Lord and He heard them. The following morning the praise team was sent out before the army and the Lord fought the battle for them. He completely destroyed the enemy that was attacking them.

What can I learn from this passage on fasting?

  • It is okay to fast in response to an attack of the enemy.
  • It is okay to ask for help.
  • There is a cause for national fasts.
  • I need to listen for the Lord’s instructions when I fast.
  • Even when the instructions seem odd, I need to obey.
  • Sometimes the battle is not mine, but the Lord’s battle.-

  • Praise can be spiritual warfare.
  • Stay humble in those situations where God fights for you.
  • Praise God when the victory comes.
  • Others take notice when God brings peace.

Lord, often I try to fight battles that aren’t even there, let alone mine to fight. Help me to seek You when I am facing an attack of the enemy. Help me to follow Your instructions and stand in praise throughout the battle. Give me Your peace that others might take notice. Amen.
