For I desire mercy and not sacrifice,
And the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings. Hosea 6:6
Some translations say God wants our loyalty or faithful love. This is God’s message through Hosea to the Israelites expressed through his relationship to a prostitute.
Often we choose a life of sacrifice because others can see it. In service to others, we feel like we are really doing something for God, versus faithfully loving Him and showing kindness without all the show. The most intimate of relationships is not lived for the world to see, but instead behind closed doors. Our faithfulness to God is seen in the prayer closet, by the Lord.
Our service is not a sacrifice when it flows from a relationship. God desires us to know Him deeply above sacrificial offerings. We don’t offer burnt offerings anymore because Jesus is the propitiation for our sins. He is our atonement, but God still wants us to know Him. In knowing Him, we understand that Christ paid the complete price for our sin. We can embrace God for all that He is, accepting His full character also allows us to understand our identity in Him.
Lord, I want to show mercy, be faithful, and love You completely. Not as a sacrifice but born out of my relationship with You. Help me to put my relationship with You above all else. Let me know You intentionally and as completely as I can. In Jesus name Amen.
