Some eight days after these sayings, He took along Peter and John and James, and went up on the mountain to pray. And while He was praying, the appearance of His face became different, and His clothing became white and gleaming. And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. And as these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—not realizing what he was saying. While he was saying this, a cloud formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. Then a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!” And when the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen. Luke 9:28-39
Jesus went away to pray taking three disciples with him. He was transfigured there on the mountain. He knew what He was about to face. I have heard it said that Moses represents the law and Elijah the prophets. Jesus fulfilled both.
Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Luke 24:44
What stands out to me is Moses was dead. Elijah had been taken up in the Chariot of fire. How were they both present with Jesus and the disciples? Why is that significant?
I thought about how Moses delivered the people. Just as Jesus was about to deliver all mankind. Elijah called the people of Israel to repent and return to God. Jesus was about to bring everyone back to God through His death and resurrection. This passage said God sent them to Jesus to talk about what was to come.
Was this to minister to Jesus the Son of Man? Then God came and spoke “This is My Son, My Chosen One. Listen to Him”. Maybe this ministered to the Son of God? Or maybe it was the other way around? Moses and Elijah were sent as a positive reminder of the faithfulness of man to God, despite their sin to encourage the Son of God in the task He was about to endure. And then the Son of Man was being reminded that God sent Him. Also God spoke to the disciples to listen to Jesus.
Lord, I pray that You would deepen my understanding of Your Word. I believe there is a deeper meaning to it. I believe that we are just scratching the surface of what You have hidden in Your Word as treasures for us. I want to know more.
