They Do Not Know

But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. Luke 23:34

Jesus was hanging on the cross praying for forgiveness for those who put Him on the cross. He was praying for those who tortured Him. He was praying for those who mocked Him and those ensuring His death. That is forgiveness. I know I’m not there. Jesus extended the prayer even as those beneath Him cast lots for His clothing.

Often I’m seeking a repentant heart and an apology before I want to extend forgiveness. Yet Jesus is the standard. He extended forgiveness and asked for God’s forgiveness for those who were killing Him, while they were doing it. They were not repentant. They were not asking for forgiveness or apologizing for their actions.

How could He say they didn’t know what they were doing? Crucifixion is an intentional act. The Roman soldiers perfected the torturous process. They knew what their actions would lead to. Their behavior was intentional. Maybe, Jesus meant they didn’t know the bigger picture. They were being tools in the hands of Satan, and they didn’t know.

Lord, help me to forgive like You. While I do ask to be spared from the torture You experienced, I still want to extend forgiveness to others the way that You have extended it to me. Help me not to worry about their heart but to offer what You freely gave on the cross and what You freely give to me. I asked these things in Jesus name amen.
