”Then Isaac dug again the wells of water which had been dug in the days of his father Abraham, for the Philistines had stopped them up after the death of Abraham; and he gave them the same names which his father had given them.“
Genesis 26:18
In the devotional I’m reading, The Prophetic Devotional by Jennifer LeClaire, she shared the scripture and the importance of having wells dug that you can pull from when you go through dry seasons.
I love the picture of digging up wells. Not just for the prophetic, I think it is important for all of us to have wells dug so deep that we always have reserve to pull from. The wells in the Old Testament time were community water holes or for a large extended family. Although now many wells are drawn for a single family home in America, many nations still have community wells. I’ve only lived in one house that was serviced by a well and we did experience the pump breaking, which was essential to be able to get water. We need wells dug that will allow us to serve others.
I will often say “I want to serve from the overflow” of my life, referencing the cup in the 23rd Psalms that overflows. I know that I am no go to God, myself, my family or those that I serve when I am in a dry place. It took me many years to realize that I had to stay connected to the Source in order to not get into those places.
As I started thinking about the well, my mind went to the often asked question “Is your cup half full or half empty?” In regards to the well, I thought if you have a well that you can draw from even when you’re cup is only half full, you still have water to go to.
Yet, we have something better than the Old Testament cup that gets filled to overflow. We have the Living Water that is available to us at all times.
On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’” John 7:36-37
Jesus said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:13-14
We have the ability to abide in Christ, attached to a never ending source of living water. Our effort is not in the physical sense of digging a well with a shovel or drill, our effort is surrendering to Holy Spirit to move in and through us. Our effort is spending time in prayer, talking to the Lord and allowing Holy Spirit to intercede on our behalf. Our effort is in reading, mediating, and memorizing the Word so that Holy Spirit can draw on what has been placed within us. When we stay connected, we may go through seasons where we feel dry, thirsting for more, but we are never cut off from our supply!
