Cisterns

for my people have committed two sins:
they have turned away from me,
    the spring of fresh water,
and they have dug cisterns,
cracked cisterns that can hold no water at all.
Jeremiah 2:13

Jeremiah was told by God that the people had turned from not only the living water of God, but the cisterns that they were using, which held rainwater for storage were cracked. They had lost their fresh connection from God and even that which was stored up was seeping out.

I turned away from God twice, but I never let the cistern run dry. My cistern was not cracked because it was dug in a strong foundation. I am thankful that I didn’t lose Him and He never left me.

As believers, it is important that we stay connected to the spring of living water. It is important that our cisterns are solid with no cracks. This means that we take care not to let cracks come in from letting things get too dry from neglect. As a believer, we have to ensure that we stay filled with the Word of God. Cracks can also occur when a cistern is abused or neglected. It is important as believers that we steward the Word of God.

Lord, thank You for keeping the walls of my cistern solid and still partially filled when I turned away from You. Thank You for drawing me back to Your living water. I love You and I praise Yu. Help me to never stray again.
