Always Thirst

“Be like newborn babies, always thirsty for the pure spiritual milk, so that by drinking it you may grow up and be saved.” ‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭2‬:‭2‬

I remember working with a family where the incident was failure to thrive. We eventually learned the formula was being prepared wrong, so the baby was getting liquid without much of the nutrients. She was supplementing with juice trying to add calories. It was not intentional, just a young mother with poor literary skills.

This was the thought and image that came to mind as I read the scripture today. We often thirst, but settle for a watered down gospel or worse a false substitute like juice that the mom thought she was supplementing with but was really substituting the milk the baby would have been drinking. We need the pure milk required for reading (or listening) to the Bible for ourselves and allowing Holy Spirit to grow us up and save us. The rest should be supplemental – the preacher, podcasts, books and group studies that add to your diet, not replacements or substitutes.

Salvation is for all. When we believe in our heart and confess with our mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord, we are saved. But God doesn’t just want to save us, He wants to transform us. That transformation takes intentionally feasting on the pure milk of the Bible. When we regularly consume the Word, it will slowly transform us and cause growth in our life.

Prayer – Lord, thank You for the steady diet of Your Word to help me grow. Thank You for saving me from he sin that I may not be aware of but that You know stunt the transformation You want in my life. Increase my thirst for Your pure milk.
