“I come to you, Lord, for protection; never let me be defeated. You are a righteous God; save me, I pray! Hear me! Save me now! Be my refuge to protect me; my defense to save me. You are my refuge and defense; guide me and lead me as you have promised. Keep me safe from the trap that has been set for me; shelter me from danger. I place myself in your care. You will save me, Lord; you are a faithful God.”
Psalm 31:1-5
As I wrote this out, I wondered “did David write the words in each chapter of Psalm in a single sitting or over a period of time?” This passage goes on for fourteen additional scriptures. Even in these five verses David goes from “Save me” a plea that has some urgency to it to recognizing God as everything. He went from “Get me out now God” to declaring God as protection, refuge, defense, Savior, guide, safety and shelter. He says “I am in Your care and because I know that You are faithful I will eventually be saved.”
That is some quick internal processing which is whay I wonder if it was all done in a single sitting. I know it the answer is “yes” it is because David did the work alongthe way to this point in His life. If it is “no”, I can relate!
I have started a lot of seasons in my life with “God, get me out now!” and sometimes He does. When He rescues me , I usually end up in something similar down the road in my life. I have learned that there is usually a lesson I need to learn in those hard season I just wanted to be delivered from.
David was anointed king by Samuel and then returned to the fields as a shephard for years. Then he was promoted to harp player for King Saul and would spend his time between the shepherd fields and playing the harp for Saul when a tormenting spirit came upon him. David was on a break from the fields taking food to his brothers when he killed Goliath.
Saul decided to make him the commander of the army after that but soon became jealous because the people praised David. He would try to kill David with a spear while David played the harp.
However, this was their song: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands! I Samuel 18:7
David ran from Saul after facing Goliath and slaying tens of thousands warriors. In the natural that doesn’t make sense. He kills a giant but runs from a man. David knew that King Saul had been appointed by God. He honored him despite the fact King Saul was trying to kill him. Could the field, Goliath and Saul have been training ground for what came next and when others, including his own son, would try to kill him?
What areas in my life is God preparing me for the next season of my life? Do I have the internal ability to go from “Rescue me now” to “Lord, I believe there is something I need to learn in this season. I know You will be faithful and eventually you will save me from these circumstances.”?
Prayer – Lord, Protect me from myself so I walk through these learning seasons in Your strength. Protect me from the parts that are just the enemy trying to keep me from Your purpose in my life. Let me find refuge and shelter in You for rest when my soul is overwhelmed. I place myself in Your care knowing that You are faithful and You will save me in due time.
