Guarding with Vigilance

Keep your heart with all vigilance,
for from it flow the springs of life.
Proverbs 4:23

Vigilance is the action or state of keeping careful watch for possible danger or difficulties

This vigilance, we are called to keep is something that would keep us from being complacent because it takes constant action on our part. It is being careful about what we allow in our life. Giving ourself permission to stop any activity we are watching, hearing, or doing if we realize that it is contrary to the Word. If it is contrary, it is a danger to our soul.

It is giving ourselves permission to leave a difficult situation so we are not tempted beyond what we can bear. Realizing we have that choice and as a guard to our heart (and also that of our children’s hearts) we have a duty to watch out for those situations.

Guards are given authority to take action when something is wrong. If they are being watchful they can take action before things escalate and stopping any compromise of security in what they are guarding. We have the same responsibility in our own lives.

Lord, help me to diligently guard my heart and what I allow in my life.
