Quench the Spirit

Do not quench the Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:19

Bill Johnson contrasted Ephesians 4:30 about grieving the Spirit with this verse in Thessalonians. “Grieving” he said “is caused by things we do or allow in our lives. Quenching is when we stop the flow of the Spirit.”

I think in my own life, I am quick to see and remove those things that would grieve the Spirit. I know I am not perfect in this area, but I am quicker to respond if there is something I know saddens the Spirit of God.

I realize that I have only recently started to recognize when I am stopping up the flow of Holy Spirit. I have started to recognize when I am not being obedient in what He wants. I see at times I stop allowing Him to move in and through me. I feel regret when I do this. I feel anxious until I am obedient to Him. I feel peace when I do obey. I don’t want to quench Holy Spirit, I want to be prepared and available when He says move.

Lord I know Holy Spirit empowers me to do what You have called me to do. Help me to allow full access to my life and to be quick to obey so I don’t quench Your Spirit.
