Career Christians

And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Matthew 4:19

As I read this passage, I was struck that the disciples Jesus first called were working. They were not sitting at the temple studying. They were in their workplace. God still calls us in our workplaces. He wakes us to our calling when we are already working.

I am not a fisher, but I am a social worker of people, I am a care manager of people. We are called to reach people where we are; for some that is a formal ministry, but for most it is going into the world – into our workplaces, our communities, our families, and being the light at whatever we are doing.

There were many times where Peter was still seen fishing after he was called as a disciple. Paul was a tentmaker. Matthew was a tax collector. They worked; I feel like we miss that in looking back at their lives. They were not just Christian’s they were career christians.

Lord I take for granted the lives that the disciples lived when you called them. Help me to carry You with me everywhere I go. Help me to follow You even when I am a social worker and a case manager. I love You and want my life to be lived for You.
