The First Job Description

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” Genesis‬ ‭2‬:‭15‬ ‭

Adam was given this duty before the fall. It was not a punishment. God had been the gardener before and Adam was made in His image. Work came before sin entered the world. Adam was given the role of being a gardener.

The devotion I read today pointed out Jesus was mistaken for a gardener by Mary.

Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.”” ‭‭John‬ ‭20‬:‭15

The Bible is full of gardening analogies. John 15 with pruning and cutting. Different parables about sowing, growth and harvesting. I admit I don’t have much of a green thumb. Somewhere inside of me though is that image of God as gardener as I was made in His image.

Prayer – Lord, thank you for giving us work before punishment for sin. It shows we were made to work and do things that are productive. Lord, till up any fallow ground in my life. Cut back anything that needs pruning. Plant what I need in my life. Let the fruit of my life bring You glory. Amen.
