The Sabbath

So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation. Genesis 2:3

The Sabbath is a holy day. Israel there are whole communities where you cannot walk or drive a car on the Sabbath. There are elevators that stop one minute on every floor because they don’t work to push the button. This is shut down to allow the observance of the holy day. I was both in awe of the reverence and annoyed by the religious aspect of it. We were created in God’s image and he rested.

And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. Mark 2:27

God set the example for us to follow. We needed rest for the work that we do. It wan not meant mean to be a religious act, but a blessing for man and one that we should strive for.

So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. Hebrews 4:9-11

I make a point to not work on Sunday. When I do it, it has been so someone else could have that day of rest. I also try to get all my household chores done Saturday or wait until Monday so I can have a day of rest. I may never follow all the Sabbatical Laws but I am striving for God’s rest. I want to try to follow in His pattern. I know I can’t do it on my own and that I will still drive and do things with my husband. I can make it my motivation and intent to Sabbath.

Lord, thank You for knowing our need for rest. Give me wisdom in following the Sabbath, not out of religious duty where it controls me but because I recognize Your wisdom in my need for rest. Let me use the Sabbath for your glory and honor to spend time with You not just be lazy. I love You Lord.
