Generations

Passage – showing grace to the thousandth generation, forgiving offenses, crimes and sins; yet not exonerating the guilty, but causing the negative effects of the parents’ offenses to be experienced by their children and grandchildren, and even by the third and fourth generations.” Exodus 34:7

Restated in my own words – God’s grace is shown throughout the generations. He forgives offenses, crimes and sins allowing the natural consequences to be applied and even to affect 3rd and 4th generations.

Application to my own life – As I wrote these scriptures, I immediately thought what a contradiction God’s grace. His grace goes for thousands of generations but letting consequences go for four generations. Just because consequences continue doesn’t mean God’s grace isn’t there.

I think about the abuse that occurred in my family, it went on for at least three generations that I know about. Consequences followed as well but His grace has covered them if they were willing to receive it. Steps were taken to break that cycle.

There was a pattern of in my spouse’s family of a parent leaving their child. Consequences were there, the impact on their lives can be seen, but God’s grace covered them. My husband came back and that cycle was broken.

Your response back to God – Lord thank You that although consequences may happen that Your grace is so much more powerful. You are an amazing God.
