Scripture But our homeland is in heaven, where our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, is; and we are looking forward to his return from there. Philippians 3:20
Thought of what the Scripture means – I am a citizen of heaven
Application to my life – I am a citizen of Heaven. There has been much topic in the media, at work and at home about culture. Heated topic for most when they discuss the melting pot of America and our culture versus the culture of those migrating to America. I have found myself more than once on the opposite side of the argument, but the scripture makes me realize I might need to change my stand. Up until now I assert people have a right to keep their culture, look at what assimilation did for the Native Americans. Have gotten some dedicated land but whites came in and their culture is all but lost, except a remnant. To me people claiming immigration need to learn our language and follow our way of life is like the pot calling the Kettle Black because of the above reason.
However, regardless where I live I am a citizen of Heaven and Christ is coming back for me and for everyone else that believes in Him. Culture is defined as a quality and a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in the arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc the intellectual side of civilization (c1805); the collective customs and achievements of a people (c1867).
My customs should reflect heaven. Is my excellent example. People through love and service. Keep those two things at the forefront of my life and my thoughts, my words, my actions it shouldn’t matter who is in front of me and how they talk. I won’t let how they follow the customs of their culture change how I treat them.
Response to God – Lord, let my primary culture be that of the Kingdom of God. Let that be the culture I most identify with and most reflect to the world around me.
