Trust in Insecurity {#Write31Days}

I remember being told that I was insecure.   I was shocked when the words left my pastor’s lips.  I was sitting there beside my husband in marriage counseling.  It was a challenge to this confident appearing lion personality.   It took some self-reflection to see it wasn’t a judgement on my pastor’s part, it was discernment from God on his part to speak into my life at a time I was ready to hear and start that healing process.  My pastor saw my mask and God showed him how I saw myself.

My pastor’s  words made me begin to search how I really saw myself.  When you wear a mask for so long, you begin to believe that is who you are, or at least I did.  When you’re a mom, a wife, a daughter, volunteer, and an employee it is so easy to find, or really get lost, in that identity.  Even being labeled a Christian creates an identity that is filtered through personal perceptions – mine and others.  My identity wasn’t solid, I wasn’t even an adult when I took on any of those labels.

romans1513I went back to the basics trying to discover who I was, not what I did in certain roles.  I sorted through what I had taken on from my family, friends, and opinions of society and what I truly believed for myself.   I had a faith in God.  I knew He was my creator  I had to decide who I was and why He created me.

I started to put into practice lessons I had learned throughout my life.  I started applying scripture to my life.  I started to discover who God says I am.  There is a joy, peace, and confidence that comes with trusting God in who He says that you are.

Worth and value come from the Creator.  A $1,000 bill gets its worth and value from the creator – it doesn’t matter if someone says it is only worth $5 – it is still worth $1,000.  It doesn’t matter if the bill is used for legal or illegal activities – it is still worth $1,000.  Even if it is tattered and torn – it is still worth $1,000.  The truth was it didn’t matter what others had said about me, the things that I had been used for in my life, or the things that had been done to me that left me tattered and torn, God is still the determining Creator of my worth and value.  Once that lesson really sunk into my life, I started to really search out who my Creator says I am.

There are many truths found in the word about who Christ says I am – who Christ says you are.  They will mean nothing until you trust that those Words apply to you.  You have to trust that God is talking about you when He says “You are accepted.”  “You are secure.” And “You are significant.”  Those are just a few of the things He says about His children.

I wish that I could say that today I walk  in full confidence of  who I am in Christ, that I left my insecurities behind.  It is a daily battle.  Some days are better than others.  Some days I boldly walk in who I am.  Other days I am begging God to remind me because I just am not sure that He was talking about me.  I am further along in my journey today than I was just one year ago, and certainly more secure than I was ten years ago.  It’s a daily journey and choice between listening to the flesh and listening to the Holy Spirt.

For those reading this  I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. That you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit as you begin to discover and walk in the person He designed you to be.

Below is some scriptures that started me on my journey.  I encourage you to being that journey here.

  1. Most people can’t believe it, but I have struggled with insecurity all my life. God has brought me a long way, but Satan loves to whisper in my ear that I am worthless. Praise the Lord He always has an answer to old Slewfoot! 🙂
